Personality:
A savvy woman who's learned to haggle and charm her way in the world, Vex is in fact considered the more practical and prepared of the twin half-elves in Vox Machina. She tends to exude self confidence, happy to banter with both allies and enemies alike (so long as she's in a good mood), and making the occasional off colour joke that isn't necessarily suitable for the audience at hand. She's a Lady who swears and isn't above a good innuendo. She's not easily intimidated, at least on the surface, and recognises when a situation warrants being taken seriously. Or not too serious - sharing a streak of mischief with her twin, Vex knows when not to take herself seriously, which can help keep her friends from getting too caught up in the stress of their lives as adventurers.

However when the occasion calls for it, Vex can be very no-nonsense, leading to frustration when people don’t understand something, and she sometimes struggles with the patience needed to clarify facts to others when she's already aware of the score. She can be trusted to get the party back on track; she may not the official leader, but all of Vox Machina tend to look to her before final decisions get made.

She is especially close to her twin brother, Vax'ildan, and while the two bicker often and rarely resist teasing the other, theirs is a solid bond forged over years of survival and reliance on one another. Parting the pair against their will makes this twin cranky, unhappy and brattish at times, until she has accepted the situation. One could argue that this co-dependence is not entirely (or at all) healthy, particularly given their ages, and while having one of her friends present can be a balm, it's not a guarantee. The pair have always been reluctant to give the other up or be separated for long, and being parted from him in this new situation will prove very difficult for Vex.

While some see her interest in coin as a sign of greed, which she might even readily admit to, in truth, Vex'ahlia recognises the stability and security that gold affords her and her chosen family. She's smart, handling the finances and often finalized the contracts the group makes, and ensures that the party doesn't overspend their budget. It is thanks to this careful management of funds that Vox Machina have been able to afford the items they need for their adventures - no one wrangles a deal like Vex'ahlia!

In spite of her persona as the Cool Girl (and she is very cool), Vex cares deeply for her friends, and will do her best to reach out to them should they need it. Either with careful encouragement, rightful teasing, or common sense and calm command, Vex is very loyal to those who've earned her trust. By nature she will always want to extend a hand to those in need, though recent circumstances have taught them all to be especially cautious regarding any deals they may make. She is very empathetic, and will go out of her way to help others. She's very perceptive, which can lead to a nosy streak when it comes to the problems of those closest to her, but you better believe she'll back pedal and downplay her own problems if someone tries to express concern to her. Getting her to admit to her fears is a struggle; she'd much rather be brave in the name of someone else.

For you see, underneath all of her many masks of self-confidence, Vex'ahlia struggles with self worth, begun from her time in Syngorn thanks to the scorn and cool reception of her father and other elves. Judged for every little difference thanks to her half-blooded status (considered a blessing by humans and less than dirt by many of elvenkind), coupled with the inability to earn the approval of a father who never wanted the twins, young Vex learned to hide her pain and fear, always mindful to keep up the best of all appearances in the presence of others, not letting them get close to see how deeply those hurts ran.

Due to this, she is always mindful of how others perceive her in public. Vex has severe difficulty allowing herself to be emotionally vulnerable with anyone, even the people that she's closest to - including her twin brother. She constantly evades and dances around admitting the depth of her convictions and feelings, preferring to hide behind self-depreciating humour, disguised behind layer upon layer of masks. Allowing herself to lean on other people for help, or even genuinely confiding in them, is incredibly difficult for Vex'ahlia.

Learning that she does not need the approval of others as confirmation of her self worth is something she's only recently begun to allow herself to learn, contributed to in no small part by being given a title and social status by her close friend Percival, who made her a Baroness of Whitestone and Grand Mistress of the Grey Hunt in response to her Father's dismissive treatment to her as a person. The latter title in particular represents a position that must be earned though trial and ability, which Percival thought would suit her greatly.

While receiving these title were a big surprise and a great honour, in truth, Vex'ahlia was far more touched by the fact her friend was offering her a part of something so important to him, giving her a piece of his home to make her own. That it might also prove an extension of his own feelings for her would not be realised until later - though the two had grown closer over the course of their adventures, it wasn't until this moment that Vex realised that her own feelings might run deeper than mere friendship (even with her brother dropping very unsubtle hints). When he fell in battle, Vex revealed how she felt for him as part of the resurrection ritual, then proceeded to conceal it again, aware all her family EXCEPT Percy knew her feelings - or so she assumed. (Have we mentioned she's really bad at being open on these sorts of matters?)

Powers and Abilities:
Vex is a half-elf ranger. As of episode 69, she is a level 13 ranger/2 rogue by Dungeons and Dragons' 5th Edition standards.

Some of her abilities are Half-Elf racial traits, some are skills she's learned over time both in the field as a ranger and from training with her brother and Seeker Assum as a rogue, and finally, magic learned as part of her primary class.

Half-Elf Genetics

☆ Fey Ancestry: In d&d game terms, this racial trait grants saving throws against being charmed by magic or charm-abilities, and magic cannot put you to sleep; in Critical Role, this also allowed the half-elves of the party to clearly remember what occurred in the enchanted Feywild, a dimension on a separate plane from the Material (main world) Realm.
☆ Aging: Half-elves mature around the same rate as humans do (reaching adulthood in their early 20s), coupled with the extended life expectancy and slower aging of their elven ancestry. They can live anywhere between 150 to 180 years, and higher - if they're not the adventuring type, anyway.
☆ Darkvision: Superior elf blood brings with it superior vision in dim light and in the dark. Within 60ft, dim light is clear as day to Vex's sight, while darkness is dimmed but still allows visibility in shades of grey - no colours.
☆ Increased Charisma: Half-elves can be very charming, and Vex is especially so.

The Ranger of Vox Machina
As a beast master ranger, Vex is an accomplished archer and tracker, and exceptionally stealthy thanks to some rogue training from both her brother Vax'ildan and from Seeker Assum Emring, spy master of the Tal'dorei council. She also raised her bear-son Trinket to fight along side her.

☆ Sharpshooter - her skill with her ranged weapon of choice (long bow) is such that her attacks can often hit their mark with great power behind them, regardless of if her target is partially covered (half or three quarters). She's very good at making shots others would find impossible.
☆ Landstride - able to traverse difficult terrain without impediment.
☆ Hide in Plain Sight - Vex can spend some time and perfect a hiding place for herself or another, increading their stealth considerably.
☆ Natural Explorer; her favoured terrains are forests, mountains and the Underdark (aka the underground worlds below Tal'dorei, home to less than friendly races).
☆ Primeval Awareness - Spending a short period concentrating, Vex can concentrate on detecting the presence of a specific creature type (Aberrations, Celestials, dragons, elementals, fey, Fiends, or Undead) within 1 mile of her location, or 6 if in favoured terrain.
☆ Skirmisher's Stealth - able to go unnoticed by a specific target, even after attacking, but must then hide again to maintain that cover.
☆ Level 2 Assassin Rogue - taking lessons from her brother on top of her natural stealthiness, Vex is extra sneaky when it comes to getting the drop on her targets. Being able to take advantage of their surprise, she can do greater damage to them. She is also now cunning enough to react with speed to anything her opponents may do, able to dash away, disengage or dodge from them before they can retaliate.

• Fenthras, Wrath of the Fey Warden: This is Vex's Vestige Bow, obtained after defeating a corrupted archfae in the Faewild. It is Awakened, and not yet Exalted.

• Broom of Flying: (Death from Above). Vex's beloved flying broom, complete with a saddle made for her by Percival to improve her balance and safety when fighting mid-flight. Stolen from Gern Blanston.

• Earring of Whispers: while technically this would come under the armor/clothing umbrella, I'm calling this particular piece out on account of what it does. Activated by touch, this earring has been enchanted to send and receive messages (via magic) to and from any connected earrings, so long as the other person wearing them is within 500 feet of Vex'ahlia. Useless if lacking other members of Vox Machina to communicate with, or in areas where magic is nullified.

GAME INFO;

MAGIC ABILITY: Money On Her Mind - Vex always has exactly the right amount of funds available to her that are required for any transaction, suited to the world she's currently visiting. This works even if she happens to be broken when starting the deal; the materialization of the currency required (be it gold, gems, notes or specific trade items) forms part of the spell. While she can (and will) haggle a price down, Vex always provides the exact amount required once an agreement is met. This 'exact amount' also means Vex cannot tip extra unless she earned the money separately, and she does not get to keep any excess change from said haggling.

ANY WEAPONS/MAGICAL ITEMS?:

Raven's Slumber. A magical amulet that belonged to the previous Champion of the Raven Queen, Purvan Suul, it was recovered from his tomb by Vox Machina. This item is a portal to a pocket dimension capable of holding one (1) willing living being. This item cannot carry lone objects or dead bodies. Here it is limited to only being able to contain her pet, Trinket. On certain worlds the magic enabling the transfer between its pocket plane and the present world may be nullified, and Vex will not have the means to call on Trinket if she has not summoned him out prior to travel.

Fenthras, Wrath of the Fey Warden. Vestige Weapon that was earned by defeating a corrupted Arch Fey in the Feywild. Able to cast one oracle arrow, and may allow the growth of a tree from a corpse if Vex gets the killing blow on her enemy.

Longbow of the Sky Sentinel. An enchanted Elven bow that allows the wielder to fire a Storm Arrow once per day. Confiscated upon arrival by Astoria.

White Dragonhide Studded Leather Armor. Protective armor crafted from the hide of Vorugal the Frigid Doom, looks especially stylish. Made by artificer Taryon Darrington. (+2 AC, Cold Resistance.)

Cloak of Elvenkind. While you wear this cloak with its hood up, Wisdom (Perception) checks made to see you have disadvantage, and you have advantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks made to hide, as the cloak’s color shifts to camouflage you.

Earring of Whispers. Activated by touch, enables sending and receiving of Message spells to and from any connected earrings within 500 feet. Presently inert, and useless due to lacking other members of Vox Machina to communicate with.

"An Evening of Unbridled Guilt". A siege arrow crafted for her by Percy. Not magical. Never used.

ANY PETS?: TRINKET is the most perfectly behaved adult brown bear in bulette armor, who gives the best of massages. Raised by Vex since a cub, rescued from the same poachers that had kidnapped her and killed his mother, Trinket is loyal and obedient, and used to travelling in strange situations. He's a capable fighter.

While he himself is not magical, he did earn a blessing from a great bear spirit from the Fey Wild: should he be knocked unconscious and be within 100 yards of Vex'ahlia, he will be automatically transferred to her locket, the Raven's Slumber. He will remain within until she can summon him out and heal him.

HISTORY

Like so many half-elves, Vex'ahlia has spent most of her life suffering the cool reception of a people who don't fully accept her.

Born of a human mother and an elven father—who only later in life took an interest in their existence—, Vex'ahlia and her twin brother Vax'ildan quickly realized the only people they could truly rely on in this world were each other.

It was at the age of ten when the two were taken from their mother, and brought to live in Syngorn, the isolated elven city for which their father was an ambassador. He quietly took them in, but always kept an icy distance, and after too many years of disdainful looks, the pair decided to leave his indifference behind, and set out on their own.

Vax took to the cities, stealing small trinkets and learning the ways of the thief, while Vex kept to the woods. She preferred the isolation. Always the keen observer, she learned to hunt and to track, to spy and to shoot. And through a series of fateful events, earned herself a companion in the form of a bear—her own stolen Trinket—to fight alongside her and protect her fiercely. Also, he is adorable—and gives expert massages.

She tends to exude self confidence, happy to banter with both allies and enemies alike (so long as she's in a good mood), and making the occasional off colour joke that isn't necessarily suitable for the audience at hand. She's not easily intimidated, at least on the surface, and knows when a situation warrants being serious.

Or not too serious - sharing a streak of mischief with her twin, Vex knows when not to take herself seriously, which can help keep her friends from getting too caught up in the stress of their lives as adventurers - which (at present) is often, thanks to the threat of the Chroma Conclave over their heads.

She is especially close to her twin brother, Vax'ildan, and while the two bicker often and rarely resist teasing the other, theirs is a solid bond forged over years of survival and reliance on one another. One could argue that this bond is not entirely healthy, given their ages, and both are reluctant to give the other up or be separated for long.

She's smart, handling the finances and often finalized the contracts they make, and ensures that the group doesn't overspend their budget. While some see her interest in coin as a sign of greed, which she might even readily admit to, in truth, Vex'ahlia recognises the stability and security that gold affords both her and her family. For many years after running away from Syngorn, she and her brother lived hand to mouth on what little coin they earned, and being able to save and stretch out their finances ensured they at least had full bellies, or a room to sleep in over night. This continued when the Super High Intensity Team (or SHITs) first formed, and when they later became 'Vox Machina'. It's thanks to her careful management of funds that Vox Machina have been able to afford the items they need for their adventures - no one wrangles a deal like Vex'ahlia!

In spite of her persona as the Cool Girl, Vex cares deeply for her friends, and will do her best to reach out to them should they need it. Either with careful encouragement, rightful teasing, or common sense and calm command, Vex is very loyal to those who've earned her trust. By nature she will always want to extend a hand to those in need, though recent circumstances have taught them all to be especially cautious regarding any deals they may make.

Underneath all of many masks of self-confidence, however, Vex'ahlia struggles with a sense of self-worth, begun from her time in Syngorn thanks to the scorn and cool reception of her father and other elves. Judged for every little difference thanks to her half-blooded status, and unable to earn the approval of a father who never wanted them in spite of her efforts, young Vex learned to hide her pain and fear, always mindful to keep up the best of all appearances in the presence of others, not letting them get close to see how deeply those hurts ran.

It is only lately now in her adult life that Vex is slowly starting to learn that she does not need the approval of others as confirmation of her worth, helped in no small part by being given a title by her close friend Percival, who made her a Baroness of Whitestone in response to her Father's treatment of her and his indifference to her as a person -- though in truth, she was far more touched by the fact her friend was offering her a part of something so important to him, giving her a piece of his home. That the offer might also have been motivated by feelings that ran deeper than that aren't thoughts she dares entertain..

White Dragonhide Studded Leather Armor. Protective armor crafted from the hide of Vorugal the Frigid Doom. Made by artificer Taryon Darrington. (+2 AC, Cold Resistance.)

Cloak of Elvenkind. While you wear this cloak with its hood up, Wisdom (Perception) checks made to see you have disadvantage, and you have advantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks made to hide, as the cloak’s color shifts to camouflage you. (Pulling the hood up or down requires an action.)

Earring of Whispers. Activated by touch, enables sending and receiving of Message spells to and from any connected earrings within 500 feet.

"An Evening of Unbridled Guilt". A siege arrow crafted for her by Percy.

Headband of Initiative. +2 Initiative.

Pointy (Witch's) Hat. A gift from Scanlan.

Broom of Flying (Death from Above). Vex's beloved flying broom, complete with the saddle made for her by Percival to improve her balance and safety when fighting mid-flight. Stolen from Gern Blanston.

Magic Carpet. Found in Thordak's treasure pile, this is a large worthy replacement for one formerly owned by Allura that was destroyed due to acid. (Thanks, brother.) Usually carried in the Bag of Holding by Grog.
